Jose Mourinho could be about to get his hands on a player Newcastle United still regret selling

Jose Mourinho could be set to benefit from a transfer Newcastle United really did not want to sanction.

While Newcastle United are now holding firm in their stance that one of their star players in Alexander Isak will not be sold, foundations were not quite as solid last summer.

Indeed, Newcastle were close to a PSR breach and duly had to sell players against their wishes.

Rather than cash in on any of their truly elite stars at that point, they opted to sell both Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh.

Time will tell how costly that will have been. Anderson continues to star at Nottingham Forest, and he could soon be under the watchful management of Mourinho

Mourinho has consistently been linked with the Newcastle job over the years, although that now looks incredibly unlikely.

Still, a Premier League return could well be in the offing.

Jose Mourinho linked with Nottingham Forest job

According to The Sun, Mourinho is a candidate for the Nottingham Forest job.

Nuno Espirito Santo did a fine job at the City Ground last season but could leave the club after reportedly falling out with sporting director, Edu Gaspar.

He also spoke of how his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis has changed recently, which could see him shown the door.

Mourinho, currently in charge of Turkish giants Fenerbahce, is said to be one of the names being considered as a potential replacement. Former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is also touted as a candidate.

It would be fascinating to see what Mourinho would do for Anderson if he were appointed. Though clearly a successful manager, he has sometimes been criticised for overlooking young players.

Newcastle United regret selling Elliot Anderson

Newcastle did not want to sell Anderson but were forced to due to PSR and they’ll no doubt continue to regret that.

The 22-year-old has hit the ground running at Forest and was crucial to their successful season last time.

There’s also increasing clamour for him to be included in the senior England squad soon too, having helped the U21s to European Championship glory earlier this summer.

Anderson admits he was shocked to leave Newcastle but, clearly, it’s a move that has agreed with him.
