Jonjo Shelvey has made his intentions with Newcastle United very clear. The midfielder’s contract runs until 2023 and, according to The Telegraph, the club are looking to give him a new deal.
Since the arrival of Eddie Howe, Shelvey has transformed himself into a key part of the Magpies’ midfield. He certainly deserves a new contract, and will hopefully remain at St James’ Park beyond next summer.
Shelvey spoke on his Newcastle future with journalist Andy Sixsmith ahead of the game against Crystal Palace.
“I’m not thick,” he said.
“I know this club is going to evolve & go only one way. But while I’m here, I just need to keep progressing, get the manager to get the best out of me & me repay that with performances. Hopefully, I can be here for a good few years.”

Shelvey is a big part of Newcastle’s winning ways
All of Newcastle’s wins this season have come when Shelvey has been in the starting XI. He’s played his part on the pitch too, producing key passes from deep and driving the Toon forward.
Furthermore, he scored a key goal in a 1-0 win over Leeds. The midfielder’s free-kick gave the Magpies their second win of the season.
When Howe first arrived at the club he spoke highly of Shelvey. The Newcastle boss has stuck to his word and it has paid off. He is just one example of current players that have vastly improved since Howe’s arrival on Tyneside.
Shelvey’s attitude of wanting to progress and get better shows the belief instilled into the squad. If he continues the way he’s going, some Newcastle fans will be happy to see him remain at the club for years to come.

Should the Toon improve their midfield options, the Englishmen is worth keeping around. His style of play is not something you find in many midfielders and offers a unique dynamic.
Howe has an ideal selection dilemma on his hands. Shelvey, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes are proving to be the go-to midfield three. But you have Joe Willock who has missed a couple of games through injury. His cross late on for Guimaraes’ goal shows what he can offer.
Also, Howe has been an admirer of Sean Longstaff. The product of the Newcastle academy is thought of highly and has been unfortunate to miss out according to the Toon boss.
