When Newcastle United faced West Ham last month, the talk of the Toon was the incredible Joelinton shirts in the away end.
A selection of Newcastle supporters wore Hawaiian shirts for the trip to the London Stadium, but there was something special about them – they had Joelinton’s face all over them.
The shirts were genius, and Joelinton later met the fans to thank them.
Now the striker-turned-midfielder has commented on the new fashion sensation, and toasted the impact of the Toon Army.
Joelinton thought Newcastle fans’ shirts were hilarious
The 25-year-old has spoken to The i, and was asked what he thought about the shirts.
“It was so funny. I was in the hotel and my babysitter sent me a photo of the guys on the train wearing my face on their shirt and I was laughing so much. It’s so good,” he said.
“I just want to make people happy. Those fans pay a lot of money to watch us and I know that so to make them happy and repay them for their support makes me very happy.
“They are our 12th man. I love this city, I love the club and the passion they have for it. They fight for it so I want to fight for it.”
Joelinton love-in is well deserved
The transformation of Joelinton has been incredible. He’s gone from out-of-form striker to red hot midfielder who cannot be stopped.
12 months ago, you never would have imagined he’d have his own chant and flag inside St James’ Park. And the shirts against West Ham were the latest ode to Joelinton’s renaissance.
Most importantly, he deserves it. The Brazilian hasn’t given up after a rough start, and his now one of the first names on the teamsheet.
The fans are now in love with Joelinton after a rough start. He dug in and turned it around, and is now drowning in adulation from the Toon Army.
