Joelinton and Bruno top of the pops: Newcastle United 2021/22 player ratings

The 2021/22 Premier League campaign was a wild one for Newcastle United.

There were severe lows at the beginning of the season, but the second part has been truly magical.

Eddie Howe has done an incredible job to move the Magpies away from the relegation zone and within touching distance of the top half.

So many Toon players stepped up this season, while the January signings also delivered.

With that in mind, here are our player ratings for every Newcastle player who featured in the Premier League in the 21/22 season…

Martin Dubravka 7/10

Injury delayed his start to the season, but Martin Dubravka played every minute since his return against Arsenal in November. He recorded eight clean sheets and got better and better as the season went on.

Ciaran Clark 3/10

A very disappointing campaign for Ciaran Clark, who lost his place in the Premier League squad in February. He’d struggled before then, with his lowest point coming against Norwich when he was sent off. However, it did inadvertently spawn the Joelinton renaissance.

Paul Dummett 5/10

Missed the first half of the season due to injury, then rarely selected by Howe. But he’s been solid enough during his three Premier League appearances.

Fabian Schar 8/10

One of Newcastle’s star performers. He’s back to his best under Howe, and has proven that he actually can play in a back four after previous doubts.

Jamaal Lascelles 6/10

Lost his place to Dan Burn, and received a lot of flack from supporters. But he’s been reliable enough at times. There’s simply been better defenders than him.

Joelinton 9/10

Newcastle’s Player of the Year. His transformation from failing striker to midfield powerhouse has been exceptional.

Jonjo Shelvey 7.5/10

Another player who has seriously improved under Howe. Shelvey has been key under the new manager, and his winning goal against Leeds will be viewed by many as the turning point in our season.

Callum Wilson 7/10

Exceptional when he has played, but once again hampered by injuries. Eight goals makes him our top scorer for the second season in a row.

Allan Saint-Maximin 8/10

An underwhelming end to the season shouldn’t take away from how good Allan Saint-Maximin was at the start of the campaign. He was our talisman and delivered in important moments. However, he will hope to be more consistent next season.

Matt Ritchie 4/10

Another player who has barely featured in 2022. Ritchie wasn’t great when the season began, with his defensive limitations costing us time and time again. He’s been reduced to a backup role since Howe arrived, but still managed to help influence the team.

Jamal Lewis 5/10

Only played once before the takeover, then suspension to Ritchie handed him an opportunity late in the year. Lewis was solid, and will hope his performances before injury can help him earn a second chance at St James’ Park.

Matt Targett 8.5/10

An exceptional signing from Aston Villa. Targett rarely put a foot wrong in a Toon shirt, and plenty of fans are keen for him to join the club permanently in a £15million deal.

Isaac Hayden 6/10

Hard working and dependable in 2021, but has spent most of 2022 suffering from injury.

Kieran Trippier 8/10

The first January signing that made every truly stand up and take not. Trippier has been great on and off the pitch, and his rating would likely be even higher had he not missed so many minutes due to injury.

Jeff Hendrick 5/10

Barely played, but will always be known as the scorer of the final goal of the Mike Ashley era. Loaned out to QPR in January after just three Premier League appearances, all of which came off the bench.

Emil Krafth 7.5/10

What a turnaround by this man. His improvement is almost impressive as Joelinton’s. Fans were worried when Trippier got injured, but Krafth stood up and delivered.

Federico Fernandez 5/10

A frustrating season for the defender that saw him play just twice following the appointment of Howe.

Javi Manquillo 6/10

An average season for Manquillo, who will be disappointed to slip below Krafth in the pecking order.

Chris Wood 6/10

A focal point when we needed it most. Chris Wood led the line expertly for Newcastle during a great run for the side. However, his lack of goals is a concern.

Ryan Fraser 7/10

Next on the list of players revitalised by Howe, who he worked with at Bournemouth. Fraser has saved his Toon career after a woeful first year.

Jacob Murphy 6.5/10

A fairly decent season for Murphy, who played a lot more than expected. He probably would have received a seven if it wasn’t for that miss against Watford.

Miguel Almiron 6.5/10

A late season surge saw Miggy’s rating improve, having initially struggled for minutes under Howe. The big question now is whether or not he’s done enough to stay at SJP.

Karl Darlow 6/10

Returned to fitness in September, but was unable to keep a clean sheet during his eight game run in the starting XI.

Freddie Woodman 4/10

Started the season as Newcastle’s number one, but was massively disappointing. He wasn’t helped by a poor defence, however.

Joe Willock 7/10

Started the season slowly but ended up playing a part in keeping Bruno Guimaraes on the bench, which was a testament to how well the Newcastle midfield was doing.

Dan Burn 8/10

A brilliant signing who has surprised a lot of fans, including myself.

Dwight Gayle 4/10

Almost an ever-present for Newcastle…on the bench. A season to forget for Gayle, who was reduced to just eight appearances as a substitute. He failed to find the net during his 34 minutes of action.

Sean Longstaff 6.5/10

An up and down season for Sean Longstaff that ended with him signing a new contract and dreaming of a brighter future.

Bruno Guimaraes 9/10

Wow. Just wow.
