Joe Willock could miss Newcastle United’s game with Wolves due to injury.
Reports emerged on Wednesday that he was a doubt for the Friday night tie, having played with a knee issue against Spurs last time out.
Eddie Howe confirmed the injury in his pre-match press conference, admitting they’ll make a ‘late call’ on the 22-year-old.
The Toon boss said: “Joe Willock has had a slight knee problem for a couple of weeks. He’s become a bit more aware of it in training so it’s something we need to stay on top of. We’ll make a late call on him. We don’t think it’s anything serious.”

That means Howe could be forced into at least one change against Wolves. But, even without an injury, Howe should be making a change in midfield regardless.
Joe Willock injury opens the door for Bruno Guimaraes
Howe started with Willock, Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton in midfield against Spurs, leaving Bruno Guimaraes on the bench.
It was probably the right decision given the Brazilian’s international exploits. However, Newcastle’s midfield didn’t deliver, and Bruno proved off the bench why he should be an automatic starter now.

After the defeat, it became immediately clear that Bruno has to start against Wolves. The big question was whose place should he take.
However, the Willock injury makes it an easy decision for Howe. In truth, he was probably the most at risk anyway after a particularly poor performance. But following the news that he played hurt, it’s no surprise that he wasn’t at his best.
The injury to Willock is a blow, but it gives Howe an easy opportunity to put Bruno back into the starting XI.
