Newcastle United have kicked off their Champions League campaign with a draw, and next on their European agenda will be stopping Kylian Mbappe.
After getting a point on the road against AC Milan, Newcastle’s next Champions League game is at home. They face Paris Saint-Germain at St James’ Park, with Eddie Howe’s side preparing to take on arguably the best player on the planet right now.
Mbappe will be on Tyneside for matchweek two of the Champions League, having helped his side pick up a victory on Tuesday night against Borussia Dortmund.
PSG won 2-0 in Germany to go top of the group, with Mbappe opening the scoring from the spot.
The 24-year-old is obviously the player Newcastle need to stop, and former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch is absolutely certain that the Frenchman will be keen to rise to the occasion on what will be a special night inside St James’ Park.

Kylian Mbappe will ‘certainly’ be up for Newcastle clash at St James’ Park
Following Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with AC Milan, Jesse Marsch spoke about the Magpies on CBS Sports. He was asked by Jamie Carragher about them coming up against Mbappe in their next Champions League game.
“Mbappe likes the big show,” he said.
“Any time he gets a chance to play in front of a big crowd and show his quality, he will certainly be up for the match.
“This is the toughest group. When you look at these four teams, whoever comes out of it is going to have to play six really good matches and have some luck along the way.
“Every home match will be really important to get three points, and certainly now that Newcastle is at home they should feel like in all those home matches that they can get wins.”
Big ask for the Newcastle defence
The Newcastle defence have now kept back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since January, putting their bodies on the line to deny AC Milan on Tuesday night.
A combination of brilliant blocks and fine saves from Nick Pope ensured that Newcastle got a point, and they are going to have to do it all again in a couple of weeks.
Mbappe will pose a different threat. With the World Cup winner likely to play on the left of attack, Kieran Trippier will already be planning how he is going to handle the man who can sometimes be unstoppable.

But Newcastle will also be planning how they can hurt PSG themselves. While we were hanging on against AC Milan, we will be a different beast at home.
The atmosphere inside St James’ Park for the game against PSG is going to be incredible, and the players must use it to their advantage.
If we are going to progress to the next stage of the Champions League, we need to win our games – even the one up against a team that includes Kylian Mbappe.
