Newcastle United have kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 0-0 draw against AC Milan, much to the delight of Toon legend Alan Shearer.
Eddie Howe‘s side have got a point on the board from their first game, but it was very nearly three for Newcastle in the dying seconds.
Newcastle only had one shot on target against AC Milan, but it was almost enough for victory. Sean Longstaff’s late effort was tipped over the bar, with the local lad coming agonizingly close to snatching victory for his boyhood club.
Away from that moment, it was all about defending for the Magpies. AC Milan had a plethora of chances, and at times it looked inevitable that they were going to score.
But a combination of good defending, impressive goalkeeping and poor finishing ensured that Newcastle got a clean sheet from their opening Champions League game.

Alan Shearer delighted as Newcastle draw with AC Milan
Following Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with AC Milan, Shearer has given his verdict on the game via his official Twitter account.
He wrote: “Take a point all day. Worked their nuts off. Good job Milan had nothing up front.”

Great point for Newcastle
The Newcastle players put everything into that game. There was desperate defending at times, with the likes of Kieran Trippier putting their bodies on the line.
During the latter stages, you could see how tired Newcastle were. But they held on and got a deserved point in their first Champions League game in 20 years.
On another night, it probably would have been a defeat. AC Milan created enough chances, but were not clinical at all in front of their home fans. As Shearer says, they had nothing up front.
If you had offered us a point at the start of the game, we would have took it, so this is an absolutely brilliant result for Newcastle.
Shearer is delighted, and so are we!
