Jamie Redknapp has encouraged Newcastle United to sign David de Gea in January after their disappointing defeat to Tottenham on Sunday evening.
There were a lot of mistakes in the game that a new goalkeeper may not solve, but it might just be a step in the right direction for this depleted Newcastle team.
On Sky Sports, Redknapp was adamant that Newcastle should explore bringing ‘world class‘ De Gea into the team as Nick Pope looks set to be out for a matter of months.
Redknapp says Newcastle need to replace Pope in January after Tottenham display
After a poor display from Martin Dubravka, Redknapp has suggested that Newcastle need to find a replacement for Pope whose shoulder injury is requiring surgery and will keep the former Burnley man out for the majority of the rest of the season.
Dubravka was directly at fault for two of Tottenham’s goals after being caught out of position for the third and conceding a penalty for the fourth which wrapped the three points up.
De Gea has been linked to a move to Newcastle in recent weeks with those at the top considering finding a temporary replacement until Pope returns.
Redknapp is one of the biggest supporters of the move and believes that the Spaniard’s experience could be key in helping Newcastle improve their poor performances in the last couple of games.
After the game, Redknapp said: “I would say so after what he did at Man United last year. How long it would take him to get up to match speed who knows, but I would certainly take him.
“Nick Pope looks like it could be four or five months when you’ve got a goalkeeper of that quality I would do it rather than wait.”

Newcastle can’t compete with Dubravka in goal
As good as he may have been when Newcastle were in and around relegation battles, Dubravka simply doesn’t look good enough at the minute to be competing for a team with Champions League hopes.
Pope comes under his fair share of criticism for his poor distribution, but his dominant display in the air and coming off of his line to deter oppositions from attacking often goes under the radar.
You don’t realise what a quality keeper you’ve got in Pope until he’s having to face up to four or five months out, then the panic starts to set in.
Newcastle will have some big decisions to make in the January window and after this display against Tottenham, De Gea’s name just might have been brought back up in conversation.
