Jamie Carragher shares what he’s noticed about Newcastle’s signings this summer

Jamie Carragher thinks Newcastle United have signed players with great potential ahead of the new Premier Leauge season.

The Magpies have brought in two senior signings so far, with Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes arriving at St James’ Park. They are set to be joined by Tino Livramento, with a deal for the 20-year-old set to take Newcastle’s summer spending beyond £100million.

While the arrival of Tonali was a big one, the signings we have made are perhaps not what supporters expected after qualifying for the Champions League last season.

But they certainly strengthen the squad, and fit what Eddie Howe is trying to build on Tyneside.

That is the view of Carragher, who has shared one thing he has noticed about Newcastle United’s latest recruits.

Carragher has been speaking The Overlap on YouTube, as he predicts the new Premier League season alongside Gary Neville and fans of each club.

The former Liverpool defender has spoke about Newcastle’s summer signings, and believes they have got Howe’s fingerprints all over them.

“What’s the feelings on the signings you’ve made because I was looking at the signings and when you look at them, where Newcastle are now financially, in the Champions League, has it really excited the supporters?” he said.

“They feel to me like Eddie Howe signings. He’s looking at players who he thinks ‘they’ve got great potential and I’m a great coach, I’m going to make them even better’.

“But I don’t think they’re the type of signings that the rest of the Premier League would make.”

Toon additions fit the blueprint

There is certainly excitement when it comes to Newcastle’s signings. Tonali is the marquee arrival that we were hoping for, and there is belief that he could be a superstar at St James’ Park. However, he might not have an immediate impact.

Barnes is not as high profile a name, but he is someone who brings excitement too. And that excitement has only been amplified after his brace in the Sela Cup win over Villarreal on Sunday. He is someone who is going to add goals to this team, and will get better under Howe’s guidance. In that respect, his arrival could prove to be a masterstroke.

Then you have got Livramento, who is yet to join but feels like a formality. He is a more long-term signing, brought in to initially provide backup for Kieran Trippier before eventually taking his place down the line.

Carragher is right, they do feel like ‘Eddie Howe signings’. But that has to be considered a compliment when you look at how well his other recruits have done since becoming Newcastle United manager.
