Newcastle United had to make some difficult decisions over the course of the summer.
Indeed, Newcastle reportedly ran very close to the wind on the points deduction front and were almost hit with a ten-point penalty if they had breached the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Luckily, the club raised more than enough money to avoid that, albeit owners PIF were said to have been unhappy about the frantic nature of it all.
The club had to do business just before the deadline on June 30 and, as a result, even considered selling star man Anthony Gordon to Liverpool to desperately avoid a deduction.
Ultimately, Newcastle had to dispose with Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, players manager Eddie Howe did not want to depart.
Those at Brighton are understood to have been blown away by Minteh’s data statistics following a productive loan spell at Feyenoord, with Jamie Carragher suggesting Newcastle could live to regret selling him.
Speaking on Friday, the Sky Sports pundit relayed a similar message in regards to Anderson.
Jamie Carragher says Newcastle will regret selling their ‘little superstar’
Before watching the Newcastle academy graduate provide an assist for former Toon striker Chris Wood as Nottingham Forest beat Leicester, Carragher was effusive in his praise.

“He was brilliant, and not just for Nottingham Forest supporters watching on Monday night, I think Newcastle fans watching that will be thinking, why didn’t we keep him?” he said on Sky Sports at 7.31pm BST on 25/10/2024.
“And you look at Financial Fair Play or PSR as it is called, they had to move players on. And I think of all the players they moved on, I thought initially Minteh, who has actually gone to Brighton, would be the one they would really look at and think wish we could have kept him, and I am sure they still think that’s the case, but watching him and listening to as well the noises out in Newcastle in the last few days, the fact they had a little superstar there in Anderson and that’s the one they had to cash in on, but it looks like Forest have got a super player.
“He was outstanding on Monday, and I think that could be the one that comes back to bite Newcastle on the backside.”
Newcastle are really regretting selling Elliot Anderson
Newcastle were in an impossible position this summer. Someone had to go and selling two young players was slightly more palatable than losing any of Gordon, Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes – at least in the short term.
However, what is particularly galling is that Anderson is a product of the Newcastle youth academy, which hasn’t always been the most productive in terms of providing first-team players.
Those behind the scenes at St James’ Park and are said to have been regretting the fact they had to sell Anderson and it’s easy to see why.
