Jamie Carragher makes ‘behind the scenes’ claim about Newcastle and Eddie Howe

There are big question marks over Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle United given reports of tension behind the scenes.

The minute that Gareth Southgate announced he was stepping down, all eyes quickly turned to Eddie Howe.

Howe has been strongly linked to the England job and he appears to be right at the top of the FA’s candidates list.

Former Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has stepped in as interim since Southgate’s departure and he got off to a bright start with wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland. But the jury is still out and an approach could still be made for Howe.

It would be a big blow to Newcastle if Howe did leave, with many supporters viewing him as the right man to take the club to the very top. He has hardly put a foot wrong since replacing Steve Bruce in 2021.

Jamie Carragher discusses ‘behind the scenes’ at Newcastle

It is an open secret that there has been a major fallout at St James’ Park following the underwhelming summer window.

The heat is on Paul Mitchell after a disappointing first summer as director, and his comments about the club have not helped his position. Mitchell was branded ‘stupid’ for his interview comments and it seems that it opened up a rift between him and Howe.

Recent reports suggest Mitchell and Howe are still willing to work together, but the fallout certainly hasn’t helped Newcastle convince Howe to stay put.

Speaking on The Overlap about the next England manager, Jamie Carragher said: “I think there’s only two people for me. I think Carsley has got the job now, they will look at what Gareth Southgate did when he came through the FA and St George’s Park.

“Lee Carsley knows the players and he has a great record at Under-21 level and he has started well.

“I think the other one is Eddie Howe. It looks to me as if there’s something going on behind the scenes with Newcastle and I think eventually something will happen – whenever that will be.

“If it was me, I’d have Eddie Howe.”

It is not the first time Carragher has called for Howe to be the next England manager after stating he would be “staggered” if he wasn’t offered the job.

Newcastle must try and keep hold of Eddie Howe

After the injury crisis last season and the fallout over the summer, Newcastle are experiencing their first growing pains since the PiF takeover.

The honeymoon period is over and so it is more important than ever that the club make the right decisions to keep us on track.

Keeping hold of Howe should be a top priority. He has settled brilliantly at the club and losing him would throw everything off balance.

He has built and coached a fantastic squad and Newcastle’s best chance of keeping them together is keeping Howe at the helm.
