Newcastle United fans caught a glimpse of the future when we beat Arsenal in the final home game of the season.
It was a special night at St James’ Park, with the Magpies producing their best performance of a rollercoaster campaign. The atmosphere inside the ground was electric throughout the game, as the momentum carried on from Wor Flags’ best display yet.
The players responded, and blew Arsenal away 2-0. It probably could have been more.
It felt like the true dawning of the new era at the club, with fans buzzing to see what the future holds. The sleeping giant that is Newcastle United is awake now, and are going to become a major player in the coming years.
And Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that’s bad news for a club like Arsenal.
Newcastle will close the gap on teams like Arsenal
The Liverpool legend spoke about Newcastle on the latest episode of The Overlap, and discussed the direction the club are going in.
“I think they’re a big problem for someone like Arsenal,” Carragher said.
“The players Newcastle are going to be trying to go for, the wages they can provide…if you were a player right now you’d still go to Arsenal. What I’m saying is that gap is going to be getting closed. Newcastle are not going away.”
He went on to add: “The reason I mentioned Arsenal is they’re almost the first ones they’ll think ‘we can pick them off’ in terms of you haven’t got Champions League.
“Eventually, if that revenue, they keep spending, they bring the sponsorship as maybe Manchester City do, they can then compete against the real top teams and try and win trophies.”
Carragher is right with his comments on Newcastle
Newcastle have ambitions of competing at the top of the Premier League. That’s no secret. Amanda Staveley has spoke about wanting the club to challenge for the title in the coming years.
It will be a steady climb for the Magpies, who have already made a statement in finishing 11th this season. They nearly crept into the top half.
This summer is going to be huge for the club. They could make a real splash and begin the building work for eventually challenging for Europe.
The foundations are there. We have an excellent young coach, and owners who want to invest. The consortium have already shown the kind of money they’re willing to provide, splashing out on Bruno Guimaraes in January – a player who was once a target for Arsenal.
We also have a reconnected fanbase that is selling out St James’ Park every chance they get. And when they get inside…my word what a noise.
Everything is in place for Newcastle to become one of the big boys. But to do that they’re going to have to overtake some huge sides. That includes Arsenal.
The Gunners missed out on top four this season, and will have to play Europa League football instead. But Newcastle can simply focus on the league, and in the next few years will really start to close that gap.
Carragher is right – Newcastle are a big problem for a club like Arsenal. In fact, they’re a problem for the entire league.
