Newcastle United star Jacob Murphy will go down in the club’s history books.
Murphy has enjoyed a brilliant season for Newcastle United, scoring nine goals while providing 14 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.
It has not been an easy road for the 30-year-old on Tyneside. Newcastle paid £12million to sign Murphy in 2017 but he struggled to wholly convince at times and was sent out on loan to both West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday.
Now, however, things have changed. Murphy is one of Newcastle’s most important players and played a key role in the club winning the Carabao Cup. Indeed, it was from his assist from which Alexander Isak scored the winning goal at Wembley.
Still, the winger does not seem to think he can yet be considered amongst the pantheon of Newcastle United legends.

Jacob Murphy tells fans he’s not a Newcastle United legend yet
The forward was speaking to The Athletic and an audio clip of the interview was played on their ‘Pod on the Tyne’ podcast.
During the discussion, Murphy was asked whether or not he actually considered himself a Newcastle United legend.
He insisted he didn’t but was at “peace” with that. He then suggested it wasn’t up to him to decide that anyway.

“No but I’m okay with that,” he said.
“I’m at peace with myself. I know everything that I offer. It’s not for me to decide if I’m a legend or not, it’s for other people to come up with that.
“So, I’m just happy to go along doing my business and where we land is where we land.”
Frankly, Murphy is a Newcastle legend. The club may go on to win more trophies over the coming years, but few will taste as sweet as the Carabao Cup success, given that was the one that ended the drought.

How Newcastle United plan to reward Jacob Murphy after stunning season
It speaks to the player’s character that he refuses to put such a tag on himself despite enjoying such a brilliant season after a turbulent journey to get to the top.
Whatever he thinks of himself, however, those inside the club appear to rate him highly.
Newcastle could offer Murphy a new contract following such a remarkable campaign. His current deal expires in 2027, but improved terms feel appropriate at this stage.
Newcastle may well sign a new right-winger this summer but that doesn’t mean Murphy is going anywhere.
