Newcastle United are absolutely flying again.

After a relatively underwhelming start to the season and having suffered three consecutive defeats going into the last international break, Newcastle have again hit top form.

Saturday’s 4-0 thumping of Crystal Palace made it eight games unbeaten since the defeat to Brighton that had the dressing room believing the media were overreacting.

One of the most consistent players in that run has to be club captain Kieran Trippier, who shows little sign of letting up.

Excellent again against Palace on Saturday, teammate Jacob Murphy believes the England international is one of the best in the world.

Indeed, not long after Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson had praised the duo for their connection on the right flank, Murphy made a big claim about his teammate.

Speaking to Andy Sixsmith of Premier League Productions, the 28-year-old said: “A fine wine! 1 of the best right-backs in world.”

Kieran Trippier: Newcastle’s best signing of the modern era (Opinion)

Aside from Alan Shearer – who has hailed Trippier as the current player he’d love to have played alongside – it is hard to think of a signing who has had such a major impact on Newcastle.

Bruno Guimaraes might argue that point but Trippier was the first. Without him opting to swap Champions League football at Atletico Madrid for a relegation battle with Newcastle, who knows if the likes of Guimaraes would have been convinced to follow?

The money on offer no doubt helped Trippier come to that decision but someone only coming to the club for the financial benefits surely wouldn’t be putting in such a high level week after week, even as he approaches his mid-thirties.

What a signing he has been.
