‘It’s a great club’… Luton Town player now raves about Newcastle United after playing them on Saturday

A Luton Town player has given Newcastle United huge praise after the two teams faced off in a thrilling draw on Saturday.

It wasn’t what Newcastle and Eddie Howe were hoping for, but for a neutral it was certainly a thrilling game which could have gone either way.

Speaking after the game, Ross Barkley claimed he was very happy to be playing at St James’ Park once again after a number of visits with Everton in years gone by.

Barkley says Newcastle have a ‘brilliant’ atmosphere

Unfortunately for Newcastle fans Barkley actually has a brilliant record against Newcastle, the club that he has won the most games against with 12 victories from 17 games and just three defeats.

He couldn’t do it again with Luton at the weekend, but they certainly gave it their best shot and were close to taking the three points having led 4-2 in the second half.

Barkley was easily man of the match as he controlled the game for the visitors and showed Newcastle just how much they are missing a holding midfielder.

The now 30-year-old grabbed a goal and an assist in the game which is sure to go down as one of the Premier League classics, and Barkley was glad to have done it in a packed St James’ Park.

In his interview, Barkley said: “I do know that as I did love used to playing against Newcastle. It’s a great club, I’m a fan of the club, stadium’s brilliant, great atmosphere from the fans and I like playing in stadiums like this as well. It’s nice to get a goal and I seem to have a bit of luck playing against them as well.”

Newcastle have lost their impressive home form

In the last 18 months or so St James’ Park has been a fortress for Newcastle and it has been absolutely key this season when the team’s away form has been so bad, it’s kept them in the European conversation.

But you now have to look back to December 16 to find their last home win, a 3-0 victory against the 10 men of Fulham who had actually competed up until Raul Jimenez’s sending off.

It’s a big worry for Howe who is coming under more and more pressure and they really need to get a strong run going together or this season could very easily slip away from them.
