The supporting cast starred for Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Eddie Howe made a raft of changes as Newcastle thrashed Manchester United to tee up what looks a winnable trip to Chelsea in the quarter-finals.

Indeed, the likes of Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth impressed as Howe looked to avoid any added injuries to his key players with some huge games ahead, albeit Matt Targett was forced off.

One man brought in from the cold was Paul Dummett.

Having also convinced against Manchester City in the last round, the 32-year-old was praised for his outing alongside Krafth in central defence by Howe.

Now, former teammate Isaac Hayden has added to the compliments.

Dummett took to Instagram to celebrate the win, captioning a collage of images of him in action: “Enjoyed that 1 last night.”

Hayden, who played alongside Dummett during the Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce years under Mike Ashley, replied with two emojis indicating his feelings, one of fire and the other saying ‘Top’.

Paul Dummett: Newcastle defender proving his worth

Eyebrows may have been raised when Dummett was awarded a new contract this summer given his lack of action under Howe.

Still, the former Wales international is proving his worth.

Excellent against both Manchester clubs, the defender offers some valuable cover and the added drive of being a local lad to have emerged through the club’s academy system.

With the games piling up thick and fast, the veteran isn’t doing his chances of more game time any harm. Able to operate in a central defensive position as well as at left-back, Dummett certainly looks like he’s got something to give.

Something of a relic of a previous era, it’s fantastic to see him see him still doing the business.
