Last night Paul Dummett returned to Newcastle United’s starting lineup for the first time since August 2022 to face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

Paul Dummett hasn’t been seen in a Newcastle shirt in a competitive game since the win over Tranmere Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup last year.

By virtue of Newcastle partaking in the Champions League the magpies got to skip round two and went into the competition in the third round where they took on and beat Manchester City last night.

Dummett hadn’t played a competitive game for 13 months

Dummett returned to the starting lineup 13 months after his last outing and never missed a beat.

The 32-year-old put in a superb display making some absolutely crucial tackles and keeping Newcastle in the game.

The former Wales international took to Instagram this morning to share he thoughts on making his return saying: “What a feeling putting the black and white shirt back on at St James Park, clean sheet and through to the next round 🖤🤍”

Newcastle players flocked to Instagram to show the love

Elliot Anderson was immediately in the replies saying: “Joy to watch” followed by the heart eyes, but not to be outdone was the resident joker, Jacob Murphy who followed up with “Oh Paul” alongside the star-eyes and a drooling emoji.

There was also love from Jamal Lewis and Isaac Hayden who are both currently out on loan. Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes spread the love too as did Matt Targett with a brilliant comment: “Paul Maldini”.

Eddie Howe has said he kept Paul Dummett around as he, like Matt Ritchie, is such a big personality to have around the group, but can also still do a job when required. He certainly proved he can still do a job last night, and judging by all the comments on his Instagram, he’s definitely well liked in the dressing room too.
