It has been a very ‘interesting’ summer transfer window for Newcastle United, with four senior signings arriving at St James’ Park.
That is the view of pundit Owen Hargreaves, who has delivered an intriguing verdict on the Magpies’s summer transfer business.
More was probably expected heading into the window after qualifying for the Champions League, but once again FFP was a thorn in the club’s side. That forced the hierarchy to box clever in the transfer market, and the recruitment team have made some rather interesting signings.
Newcastle have invested heavily in the future, splashing out on the likes of Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall – although they won’t pay for Hall until next summer.
It is a brave strategy from the Magpies, as both players will likely spend a lot of time on the bench. But the club have focussed their efforts on strengthening the squad and building for the future, and it should prove to be the correct call in a few years’ time.

For now, ‘interesting’ is the word that Hargreaves has used to describe Newcastle’s transfer business, but he certainly means it in a positive sense.
Owen Hargreaves hails Tino Livramento as he assesses Newcastle’s summer signings
Hargreaves has appeared on The Kelly And Wrighty Show where he discussed the signings Newcastle have made this summer.
“Newcastle is an interesting one,” he said.
“Tonali is the headliner but they signed a lot of good young players. Livramento is a fantastic player. Lewis Hall, he’s another good player. Harvey Barnes.
“They’ve gone for that personality rather than superstars. They’ve gone for nice guys.”

A transfer window with an eye on the future for Newcastle
Hargreaves makes an interesting point about Newcastle going for the right personalities. Eddie Howe has brought in players who will add to the team spirit on Tyneside rather than disrupt it.
It might take a while to bare fruit, but this will turn out to be a brilliant transfer window for Newcastle.
As Hargreaves says, Livramento is a fantastic player, and his arrival means that we already have a replacement for Kieran Trippier when the time comes for his Toon career to end.
And on the opposite side of the pitch, Hall can hopefully have the same kind of impact.
In the short term, it perhaps was not a great transfer window for Newcastle. But in the long term, it will be a brilliant one. Right now, Hargreaves says it is ‘interesting’, and that is probably the best way to describe it.
