Newcastle United’s loss to Chelsea in the Carabao Cup was a fairly feisty one.

Anthony Gordon, of course, was forced off at Stamford Bridge after a nasty challenge from Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo.

Newcastle then saw their Carabao Cup campaign ended following Kieran Trippier’s mistake as the Blues levelled the tie late on before winning a penalty shootout.

A night that started so well went sour, with Callum Wilson’s opener counting for nothing in the end.

The striker did brilliantly to pounce on a defensive mistake from the home side and then duly celebrated in front of the Chelsea fans, shushing them after his strike.

Now, he has explained why.

Callum Wilson: Why Newcastle star was annoyed by Chelsea fans

Speaking on The Players Channel Podcast, Wilson admitted he had been riled by the home supporters.

“While we are on it [respect] as a subject,” he said.

“We were at the Bridge, I scored my goal, I am running off celebrating and just excited and you know what it’s like, when you score in an away stadium it’s fingers up, this, that, all sorts of gestures and hand signs. I am just minding my own business and then in the end I was like nah, I’m not having it! I’m seeing certain people.

“So I just stopped and blew someone a kiss and tell them to shush.

“After the game ‘Callum shushes the Chelsea fans’, people were telling me why are you shushing people again about respect! I can’t do anything! Someone is sticking their finger up at me and I just carry on walking past? Alright.”

Callum Wilson: Newcastle star will be needed at his best against Luton

After struggling against AC Milan in the Champions League, it was good to see Wilson back in the goals even despite the defeat.

With Alexander Isak still not fully fit, Eddie Howe needs the striker at his best. Lose at Kenilworth Road and continue struggling on the road and the pressure would really start to ramp up after a difficult few weeks.

If Newcastle are going to break Luton down, they will need a strong finisher like Wilson to pounce on chances.
