Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe tried to see the positives from the defeat to Chelsea.
However, it did not look like there were many as the Magpies lost 3-2 at Stamford Bridge. It was a really disappointing display from Howe’s players, who made an average Chelsea team look like title contenders.
There were errors all over the pitch from players in black and white. Sven Botman did not cover himself in glory for Chelsea’s first goal, which was incredibly soft to concede.
Elsewhere, Sean Longstaff looked a complete shadow of the player who was so important last season. His intensity has gone, while his passing was sluggish at best.
Even Bruno Guimaraes, who is Newcastle’s talisman, was below par.
Yet Eddie Howe was not as despondent about the performance as the Toon Army. After the game, he stated that his side were competitive and showcased control at times during the 90 minutes.
Ian Wright disagrees with Eddie Howe’s comments after Chelsea loss
Those comments confused Ian Wright, who was on punditry duty for the game on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.
“I cannot understand why they didn’t play a deep block and frustrate Chelsea more,” he said.
“I was very confused by some of the things Eddie was saying, because I didn’t see where they had any control.”

Wright is correct about Newcastle
Not to go against the boss, but I have to side with Ian Wright on this occasion.
While Howe may believe Newcastle had control at times against Chelsea, it did not result in a cohesive performance. There were spells of decent possession, but they amounted to nothing.
Overall, we were sloppy. We were the masters of our own downfall at Stamford Bridge, rather than Mauricio Pochettino’s side being brilliant.
As Wright says, it is odd that Newcastle did not defend deeper. It worked against Wolves last weekend, while other teams have undone Chelsea this season by playing that way.
It was a tactical blunder, and one that resulted in a really disappointing defeat in the capital.
