There has been much speculation over the international future of Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson, who is eligible to play for both England and Scotland.
Anderson was called up to the Scotland squad for this International break, but pulled out with injury, meaning he has still not made his competitive debut.
England manager Gareth Southgate has praised the midfielder and hinted that he could be looked at with a view to a potential England career.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of England’s clash with Scotland tomorrow, manager Steve Clarke admitted that Anderson will be considered for his squad.
“We like the player as well. Elliot will still have that choice to make. When I come out of this camp I will look at what we have done, what we’ve had, what’s occurred over this camp. We will do a debrief and then we will shape what we do from there,” he stated.
What should Anderson do?
The 20-year-old is yet to start for Newcastle this season, but has come off the bench in all four league games so far.
Anderson played for Scotland throughout his youth career but was born in England and is eligible to represent Southgate’s side.
With Euro 2024 coming up at the end of the season, a quick decision will be needed from Anderson, and perhaps choosing the in-form Scotland could be his best bet.

England’s squad has a lot more competition in both central midfield and on the wings, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden and James Maddison all competing for limited positions, and it is unlikely that Anderson would gain a National Team chance any time soon.
He has the potential to start for Scotland at the Euros this summer, and become a key player for Clarke’s side in the long-term, and if he is happy to play for them, this would be a better choice in the short-term at the very least.
