Gareth Southgate says England are watching ‘brilliant’ Newcastle man closely

While pre-season seems a long time ago now, Newcastle United had a few breakout stars.

Much was made about the level of Lewis Miley’s performances, while Elliot Anderson was another tipped for a breakout season after some “brilliant” outings.

The 20-year-old was involved in the Newcastle first-team last season too but was limited to only three Premier League starts.

Still, despite impressing during the club’s tour of the United States, Anderson is yet to start this season.

That, however, has not stopped him being talked about.

Gareth Southgate says England are watching Elliot Anderson

Indeed, England manager Gareth Southgate has admitted the FA are keeping close tabs on Anderson.

The midfielder recently pulled out of the Scotland squad for games against Cyprus and the Three Lions. While he has represented the Tartan Army at most youth levels, Anderson is also eligible for England and has previously turned out for their U19 side.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Scots in Glasgow, Southgate said (via the Daily Mail): “We liked him and we do like him, we think he’s a player that’s doing really well.

“He was called into their (Scotland’s) squad earlier in the week and I don’t know what the position is at the moment.

“I saw he’s pulled out. Let’s see, that’s something that John (McDermott, FA technical director) and others at our organisation will be picking up. He’s definitely a player we like.”

A big decision for Anderson – and for Harvey Barnes too

Dual nationality is a deeply personal consideration for anyone.

Without speaking to the player directly, it’s difficult to know where his heart lies. Anderson may well have pulled out of the Scotland squad due to injury and still have plans to represent them when fit.

A cynic, however, may suggest he’s merely waiting for England.

It’s a big decision for the young player to make and teammate Harvey Barnes could be facing a similar dilemma.

Barnes has one cap for the Three Lions but that came in 2020 and he has not been involved since, with recent reports suggesting he’s considering switching allegiance to Scotland.

It is not a decision to take lightly.
