Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has been rubbing the Magpies’ Carabao Cup win against Manchester City in the face of Micah Richards.
Shearer and the former Manchester City defender have appeared on the Rest Is Football podcast following Newcastle’s 1-0 win over last season’s treble winners.
It was a shocking night inside St James’ Park, where Alexander Isak’s goal helped Newcastle record a famous victory.
It means that the Magpies are in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, where they will face Manchester United. As for Man City, their quadruple hopes are over.
While Guardiola took time to praise Newcastle and their players, he was not happy after the game.

But Shearer and the rest of the Toon fans do not care, and the club’s all-time leading scorer was not taking any of Richards’ nonsense in the aftermath of the 1-0 win.
Shearer reminds Richards that Newcastle ‘battered’ Man City
On the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast, Richards quickly took issue with Shearer celebrating Newcastle’s win over Manchester City.
Richards: “Hold on, you got battered in the first half! What are you talking about?”
Shearer: “And you got battered in the second half Micah! Down the hill, I told you about down the hill! Your boys couldn’t handle it. Pep was moaning about kicking them. Are you not allowed to tackle Man City now? What’s going on.”

Shearer puts Richards in his place
Richards is right, Man City did batter us in the first half. They battered us 0-0.
But unfortunately for Man City and for Richards, there was a second half. And it was a second half where Newcastle were much better, got in City’s faces and actually found the net.
On the balance of play, it was an even game. Each side had their own 45 minutes of joy, but the Magpies were the only team to capitalise.
Newcastle were more physical in the second half and got close to City, much to Guardiola’s fury. However, the only tackle that overstepped the line was Kalvin Phillips’ on Jacob Murphy. Had VAR been used, he would have seen red.
Manchester City can have no complaints. They did not make the most of their dominance, nor could they handle Newcastle when they came out swinging.
