It is non-stop for Newcastle United at the minute, who have the chance to put three more points on the board when they face Burnley on Saturday.

After a slow start to the season, it has been high after high for Newcastle. There was the drama of Milan followed by the record-breaking victory over Sheffield United, then came the Carabao Cup shock.

The Magpies beat Manchester City on Wednesday night to advance in the cup, as Eddie Howe‘s side continue to compete on all fronts.

Next up for Newcastle is the Premier League, where they face another one of the newly promoted sides.

Vincent Kompany’s Burnley team travel to St James’ Park with just one point to their name, having failed to win any of their opening five games after returning the Premier League.

They have played well at times, but will come up against a Newcastle team that is enjoying a rich vein of form.

Plenty of Howe’s star names are excelling, while the Magpies have got their solidity back. Nick Pope has kept four clean sheets in a row, and will want to make it five on Saturday.

Paul Merson thinks he will do just that, as he backs Newcastle to make it three Premier League wins on the spin.

Paul Merson expects Newcastle to beat Burnley

As part of his latest column for Sportskeeda, Merson has predicted that Newcastle will beat Burnley on Saturday. He believes that it will be a 3-0 win for the Magpies, and has explained why.

“Newcastle United were outstanding against Sheffield United last weekend – the fact that they had eight difference goalscorers in their 8-0 win was a phenomenal achievement,” he wrote.

“Eddie Howe and co followed it up by knocking Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup, indicating that they are showing signs of bouncing back after a rough start to the season.

“If they get after Burnley like they can and play at the tempo that has seen them succeed in recent weeks, I think they’ll blow the Clarets away quite comfortably.”

Momentum on Newcastle’s side

Newcastle are riding a wave of momentum at the moment, and will be eager for it to keep building this weekend.

In contrast, Burnley are struggling for form. While they are playing nice football, it is yet to translate into results for Kompany’s side.

Those two factors are why Newcastle are the obvious favourites going into this weekend’s game at St James’ Park.

There is a real feel-good factor on Tyneside right now, and Howe will be eager for it to continue on Saturday and into the following week when they welcome Paris Saint-Germain to the North East.

The Champions League distraction could be the only thing that works against Newcastle this weekend, but Howe will do everything he can to ensure his players take it one game at a time.

If they can do that, Merson’s prediction will hopefully prove to be correct.
