Alan Shearer has got a sneaky feeling that Newcastle United are going to get a win against Liverpool this weekend.
The Magpies welcome Jurgen Klopp and co to St James’ Park on Sunday, and the likes of Paul Merson and Chris Sutton have backed the home side to pick up all three points.
That is despite the fact that Newcastle have a terrible record against Liverpool as of late. We lost both games against the Reds last season, while Eddie Howe has lost every game versus Sunday’s opponents since he became Toon boss.
In fact, the last time Newcastle beat Liverpool was December 6th 2015. On that day, Georginio Wijnaldum ran the show to give Steve McClaren just his third win as Magpies manager.
Since then, Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 games against Newcastle, so it would be a real shock if Howe’s side can get a result.

But the Newcastle players will be backed by a raucous home crowd, and Shearer has a feeling that his side’s awful run in this fixture is going to come to an end.
Alan Shearer thinks Newcastle will cause Liverpool problems
Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer offered his prediction for Newcastle United vs Liverpool on Sunday.
“Big game at St James’,” he said.
“Liverpool did the double over Newcastle last year. Do you remember Nick Pope got sent off didn’t he? Cost him that game in the League Cup final because he was suspended.
“I thought Newcastle did alright in that game against Manchester City last weekend without having a real threat.
“But it’s at St James’ Park. It will be absolutely rocking, the atmosphere. I fancy them to cause Liverpool problems. I’m not convinced defensively that Liverpool have got it right just yet.
“But it will be a tough game, but I think they might nick it.”

Great opportunity for Newcastle
This is Newcastle’s best opportunity for a long time to get a win against Liverpool.
We were very unlucky at Anfield last year, while the game at St James’ Park was decided as soon as Nick Pope saw red. Despite that, Newcastle created a lot of chances that would have gone in on another day.
The Magpies caused Liverpool problems back in February, and they will hope to do the same on Sunday. If they can, there is a good chance that Newcastle can ‘nick it’ like Shearer has predicted.
