Chris Sutton predicts who will win on Sunday – Newcastle or Liverpool

Newcastle United were beaten twice by Liverpool last season, but Chris Sutton believes that the Magpies’ fortunes are going to change on Sunday.

Eddie Howe‘s side welcome the Reds to St James’ Park, with the Toon boss looking to do something he is yet to do since taking over on Tyneside.

He has never beaten Liverpool as Newcastle manager, but will be confident that this is his side’s best opportunity. Despite the defeat to Manchester City, the Magpies have started the season well.

The fact we are at home will certainly give us an edge, and St James’ Park will be rocking as the Toon Army go in search of victory against Klopp, who has aimed a few jibes at Newcastle as of late.

Pundit Paul Merson thinks that Newcastle are going to be victorious on Sunday, backing Howe’s side to win 3-1. That seemed like a bold prediction from the former Arsenal man, but it is a prediction that Chris Sutton agrees with.

Sutton has predicted the scores of every Premier League game this weekend for BBC Sport, and believes that Newcastle are going to beat Liverpool 3-1 on Sunday.

“There is no great shame in losing to Manchester City [for Newcastle],” he said.

“Liverpool beat them twice last season but Newcastle are at home and in front of their own support.

“Newcastle’s opening-day win against Aston Villa was a triumph and then it was a bit of a comedown for them. There was so much excitement that Newcastle could go there and take the game to Manchester City and they didn’t do that.

“Liverpool have so many good attacking players – Luis Diaz’s goal last week was brilliant, Diogo Jota is a handful, Mohamed Salah of course and Dominik Szoboszlai looks a talented player, but do they have that midfield protection?”

A lot of pundits are predicting a Newcastle win

There is clearly a lot of confidence in this Newcastle team, as both Merson and Sutton think the Magpies are going to beat Liverpool, despite the Reds being a team we have really struggled against in recent years.

And it is not like they have started the season badly, either. They have got four points from their opening two games, drawing with Chelsea then beating Bournemouth last Saturday.

But Sutton has concerns about the Liverpool midfield, and it could be where the game is won and lost. Howe has powerful players in the middle of the park, and they could have the energy to blow Klopp’s side away.

Hopefully that is the case and Newcastle can end their poor run of form against Liverpool and move above them in the Premier League table.

That is what Sutton believes will happen, with the BBC pundit correctly predicting the Magpies’ previous two results. Fingers crossed he goes three for three.
