Newcastle United have announced the signing of 18-year-old defender Cathal Heffernan, and another teenager is on his way too.

The Irish centre-back has officially been unveiled as a Toon player, one week after he headed to Tyneside to finalise the move.

Heffernan impressed whilst on trial with the Magpies, and has now signed a long-term contract with the club after a spell with AC Milan. He becomes the second player to leave the Serie A side for Newcastle this summer after Sandro Tonali.

The deals are at opposite ends of the spectrum, but the club will have high hopes for Heffernan, and will no doubt have faith that he can eventually make an impression at senior level.

He becomes the latest Irishman to join the Magpies, with Alex Murphy signing for the club last summer. He has been with the first-team this summer, and received a lot of praise from Eddie Howe for his performances.

They are soon going to be joined by another Irish teenager, and it is someone who has delivered a message to Heffernan following his arrival at St James’ Park.

Kevin Zefi sends message to new Newcastle signing Cathal Heffernan

Following the club’s official announcement, Heffernan took to Instagram to express his delight at signing for Newcastle. He also thanked former Toon midfielder Stephen Ireland for helping him make the move.

The posted received a lot of replies, with plenty of Newcastle players welcoming him to the club such as Alex Murphy and Jay Turner-Cooke.

He also received a reply from Kevin Zefi, who wrote: “Yesss brother I love you.”

Zefi is an 18-year-old Irish winger who plays for Inter Milan, but not for much longer.

He is someone who is close to signing for Newcastle as well. The teenager was recently in advanced talks with the Magpies, and is now ready to sign on the dotted line.

Zefi and Heffernan have played together at youth level for the Republic of Ireland, and now they are going to become club teammates.

Based on the youngster’s comment, it looks like they already have a good friendship, and that should help them settle on Tyneside once Zefi’s move is finalised and he joins Heffernan at St James’ Park.
