From his performances alone, Bruno Guimaraes has prove to be an excellent signing for Newcastle United.
The Brazilian midfielder arrived somewhat out of the blue in January, and has gone on to become the best player at the club.
His impact has been seismic, and he has quickly established himself as one of the top players in the Premier League.
Bruno is the poster boy for what Newcastle want to become in the near future, and Howe has explained in more detail what made the deal even more special.
Howe on Bruno signing
Ahead of the game against Manchester City, Howe spoke to the media. With the transfer window still open, he was asked if Newcastle could pull off another surprise deal like they did for Bruno in January.
“If there was another Bruno, please let us know because they don’t grow on trees,” Howe said.
“That was an incredible piece of business really. Not just as the footballer as well.
“You’ve got to consider the person. The person is a brilliant lad who came here when the club was in a relegation battle with no conditions, no way out, no escape clause. And wanted to fight to keep the club in the Premier League. I think that shows real human qualities.
“He was all in from day one and I think that’s reflected on how well he’s done here.”
Newcastle chiefs deserve a lot of praise
The way Howe speaks about Bruno is fantastic to listen to. It highlights how big a risk he took in moving to St James’ Park. He left a club competing in Europe to join a relegation threatened side in the same year as the World Cup. And he did it without guaranteeing an easy way out if things went wrong. That says a lot about his characeter.
Amanda Staveley and co deserve a lot of praise for the deal. It’s the one that is threatening to take Newcastle from relegation fodder to European contenders. That’s how good he is.
But it sounds like Bruno is a great presence too, as well as being a great player. Character is very important when making signings to Howe. You have to be able to fit in with the current group. The 24-year-old has done exactly that.
The brief talk of a move to Real Madrid was worrying, but Bruno clearly believes in the project at St James’ Park. He wants to be a club legend, and is well on the way already.
Newcastle completed some incredible signings in January, but Bruno is the pick of the bunch.
If we can complete another deal like that one this summer then it will be the perfect end to the transfer window.
