Newcastle play host to the Premier League champions Manchester City this weekend.

Having fallen to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to the hands of Fulham last weekend, things do not get any easier for Eddie Howe’s side as Pep Guardiola’s Citizens visit St James Park.

Alan Shearer labelled Newcastle’s defeat at Craven Cottage as “awful” and it is hard to argue with the Toon legend. Slow, passive and lacking ideas – it was a defeat that was ultimately weeks in the making with Newcastle scraping through games in rather ugly fashion so far this season.

The Magpies however must dust themselves down quickly and prepare for an even tougher clash as Erling Haaland and co travel to Tyneside.

Man City themselves didn’t have it all their own way last weekend, as they rescued a late draw against title rivals Arsenal at the Etihad.

Having dropped their first points of the season against the Gunners, Guardiola’s men will be keen to get back on the winning trail this Saturday.

Team/injury news

Toon boss Howe could be without Matt Targett after he was not spotted in Newcastle training ahead of Saturday’s game.

Injuries have denied Callum Wilson of any minutes so far this season and the striker will unsurprisingly miss the City clash this weekend.

Lewis Miley meanwhile is also still out of action due to injury, meaning we will likely see the same midfield that lined up against Fulham.

Pep Guardiola’s side also have some injury concerns of their own, as this week saw Manchester City reveal that Rodri will be injured till the end of the season, after picking up an ACL injury against Arsenal.

The Spaniard’s injury will likely see either Mateo Kovacic or Bernando Silva slot in central midfield.
