Sandro Tonali has only just been announced as Newcastle United’s latest signing, but the 23-year-old is already surprising club officials at St James’ Park.

Fabrizio Romano stated that the club would release a statement about Tonali on Monday, and he has been proven correct. The Magpies have confirmed the signing of the Italian midfielder, who has agreed a six-year deal to leave AC Milan.

He is a marquee signing for Newcastle, and Eddie Howe is delighted with his latest acquisition. So he should be, as Tonali is an exceptional player who people inside the club believe could go on to be just as good as Declan Rice.

Fans are really excited to see him in a black and white shirt, and Toon insiders are reportedly shocked that he is even here at all.

Newcastle surprised they were able to sign Sandro Tonali

According to the Athletic, people inside the club are actually surprised that they have been able to sign Tonali. They have likened the deal to Alexander Isak’s arrival last summer, admitting that they weren’t expecting to be able to pull off a deal.

A senior club figure told the Athletic: “Similar to the Isak signing, we didn’t really think we could get him. Sandro is a star at AC Milan. He lives and breathes the club. We weren’t expecting it.”

Newcastle have done the unthinkable, and now Tonali is a Magpie. Just like Isak, they have signed a player they did not think was attainable.

Hopefully he is just as good as Isak, who enjoyed a really special start to his Toon career. His debut year was hindered by injury, but he proved he is a special talent when fit, scoring 10 goals in his first Premier League season.

Even more is expected from the Swede, who will now be joined by Tonali.

It will take him some time to adapt to English football, but there is a real buzz about his arrival at St James’ Park. Tonali is a player who was tipped for greatness at an early age, and has already established himself as a top level midfielder at the 23.

He immediately improves Howe’s midfield, and the exciting thing is that he is going to get even better – especially under the Newcastle’s boss’ guidance.

Tonali has shocked Newcastle once just by saying yes. Hopefully the shocks continue next season and he performs even better than anticipated.
