How Newcastle’s board now feel about Eddie Howe’s future, the pressure is starting to build

Externally Eddie Howe is being put under immense pressure as Newcastle United exited two competitions in the space of a week, but what matters to him is how he is viewed internally at the club.

Newcastle need to pick up a few positive results heading in to the new year despite the team currently being in sixth place in the league.

A new report from The Athletic suggests that Howe’s position at the club is not currently under threat by the board, but that there is certainly pressure on him to succeed in the long-term.

Newcastle’s form has to pick up this weekend

Newcastle now have the perfect opportunity to ease the pressure off of Howe this weekend with a trip to Luton Town in the Premier League.

The Magpies have now lost four of their last five games in all competitions, but a 3-0 win against Fulham last Saturday should at least give them some confidence that they can get the season back on track.

What they can also do is finally achieve their second away win of the season, the first since 8-0 against Sheffield United in September, and put this fear about playing away from home to bed for the time being.

The report suggests that any pressure to potentially sack the 45-year-old is coming purely from the fanbase or media, but that poor results are definitely increasing the pressure on him in general.

Howe still has the backing of the Newcastle board

Although they crashed out of both the Champions League and the Carabao Cup in the space of a week, Newcastle have full confidence in Howe to steady the ship and guide the team into a European finish once again.

With a January transfer window coming up, Howe will also be hoping that the board are investing in him and his staff to help out with the current injury crisis that the club have been dealing with for months.

It’s not clear exactly how much they will have to spend but the club are definitely keen to bring in a few new faces to make sure that they aren’t left behind by their domestic rivals.
