After 38 matchdays, the Premier League season is finally over, and Newcastle United have secured European football.

It was a season that will live long in the many of many fans thanks to the sensational Carabao Cup win that ended an agonising 70-year wait for a domestic trophy.

Newcastle United secured Conference League football with the Carabao Cup win, but everyone knew that Eddie Howe’s side would not be satisfied with just that.

The belief inside the club is that Newcastle have always aimed for the Champions League this season. Eddie Howe agreed with Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales that qualification was the aim, and he did exactly that.

It was a tense final day, but the Magpies were able to get the job done and are more likely to keep players like Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon this summer with other clubs across the Premier League and Europe circling.

With it now confirmed that Newcastle will be finishing fifth this season, here is how that position compares to other Premier League seasons.

Newcastle United’s best-ever Premier League finishes

Now that Champions League football is secured, fans can breathe a sigh of relief that Mitchell will be busy working on transfers for Newcastle and will look to sign big names like Bryan Mbeumo and Marc Guehi.

While the 5th-placed finish was impressive, it is not the highest position Newcastle have finished in the Premier League. That title still goes to Kevin Keegan’s 1995/96 Newcastle side that finished second.

Newcastle were as many as 10 points clear during that season, but a drop-off in form saw them lose their spot at the top of the table to Manchester United. Dalglish also guided Newcastle up to second in the table the season after, but Keegan’s 78 points were far superior to Dalglish’s 68.

Newcastle United’s worst Premier League finishes

Thankfully, Newcastle have barely had to worry about the threat of relegation under Howe. The 47-year-old joined the club when the Magpies were 19th in the Premier League table, but was able to perform a sensational escape and guide the club up to 11th in the table that same season.

However, it has never always been the same case for Newcastle, who have suffered relegation from the Premier League on two occasions.

The Magpies have also endured seasons where they finished mid-table under managers like Steve Bruce and Rafa Benitez, although that was considered an achievement based on the starts they had to those campaigns.

Newcastle fans will look back on the end of the 2014/15 season with fond memories. Jonas Gutierrez scored in a 2-0 win against West Ham on the final day of the season, ensuring survival and providing another memorable moment for the club.

After this season’s fifth place finish, Howe and co will be keen on improving and pushing for more silverware after a historic campaign that will live long in the memory.
