Newcastle United’s Premier League survival outlook could look very different by the end of tonight.
While the Magpies aren’t playing, multiple top flight sides are in action. And each game involves one of Newcastle’s relegation rivals.
Eddie Howe’s side are currently 17th in the league, four points clear of the bottom three. But that could change tonight.
Newcastle could be just one point clear of the relegation zone
The two teams directly below Newcastle are in Premier League action this evening.
Burnley host Tottenham at Turf Moor, just days after Antonio Conte’s side beat Premier League champions Manchester City. Meanwhile, Watford welcome Roy Hodgson’s old side Crystal Palace to Vicarage Road.
Neither side can escape the bottom three, but they can severely close the gap. A win for Watford would put them one point behind Newcastle. If Burnley win, they’ll be two points behind the Magpies.
Watford will have played a game extra, while the Clarets will still have a game in hand.
Ideally, both Burnley and Watford lose to ensure we remain at least two games clear of the relegation zone.
The other rival in action is Leeds, who face title chasers Liverpool at Anfield. Leeds are one of the teams Newcastle are chasing down, and could go above them this weekend if results go our way.
A win for Liverpool keeps Marcelo Bielsa’s side in touching distance – just one point above us.
Of all the teams in action, Watford appear to be the most dangerous. They face a Palace side that is struggling for wins at the moment.
A perfect night would see all three sides lose, and ensure Newcastle remain four points clear of the drop and within reach of the teams above.
Our fate remains in our hands, but it would be nice to receive some help tonight from Tottenham, Palace and Liverpool…
