The January transfer window can’t come any sooner for Newcastle United.

The Magpies have a staggeringly long injury list right now, while there is also the added issue of Sandro Tonali being suspended for the rest of the season.

It is clear that Eddie Howe needs reinforcements in January, with the Toon owners planning to back him and give his squad the boost it needs.

It is going to be a challenging window for Newcastle. Everyone knows how desperate they are for fresh faces due to the injury crisis, while Toon officials might be forced to think short-term for the first time since the change of ownership.

There are also multiple positions that Newcastle need to address, which means the club are going to have to stretch their transfer budget to the very limit.

Newcastle will have a January transfer budget of £50m

According to ESPN, that transfer budget will be around £50million. That is how much Eddie Howe will have to spend on new players in January.

ESPN add that the budget could increase, but that would depend on player sales. When you look at how depleted the squad is right now, it is difficult to envision anyone being sold.

Considering Newcastle’s financial fair play concerns and the fact it is January – a window that clubs don’t really like doing business in – a budget of around £50million is decent. It is similar to what the club spent in the previous January window, with all of that money going on Anthony Gordon.

This time Newcastle might have to stretch their budget over multiple players. But £50million is enough to get a couple of decent permanent additions, while the club also have the option of tapping into the loan market.

With the money they have available, you would like to think Newcastle will be able to get at least three new faces through the door next month.
