Newcastle United chiefs face a difficult decision when it comes to the future of St James’ Park.

The dreaded Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules continue to limit Newcastle United’s spending and growth since the PIF takeover.

Newcastle were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer to evade the regulations, but they would rather avoid a repeat of that in future windows.

Instead, all focus is on increasing revenue and a big way to do that is to simply get more fans in the stadium.

Newcastle’s ambition has always been to expand St James’ Park but club chiefs have also floated the idea of building a new state-of-the-art stadium instead.

Update on Newcastle United stadium situation

As it stands, Newcastle are still weighing up whether to expand St James’ Park or to build a new 60,000-seater stadium – ideally in a nearby location.

Expanding St James’ Park will cost between £800m and £1bn to take the capacity from 52,000 up to 60,000 – a huge price for 8,000 extra seats and refreshed facilities.

Newcastle fans have had their say on the stadium debate with supporters more in favour of leaving St James’ for a new venue.

Club chiefs promised a new stadium would be built nearby, with Leazes Park one option for a rebuild.

The staggering cost of a new stadium has now been revealed.

Across the Premier League, fans have seen how building a new stadium can put a club’s on-pitch growth on pause.

Arsenal had limited finances after moving to The Emirates, while more recently Tottenham also had to monitor their spending after moving into their new stadium.

It is something to keep in mind as Newcastle weigh up their stadium options. According to Newcastle World, the estimated price of a new 60,000 stadium is between £2-3bn.

Chief operations officer Brad Miller recently described building a new stadium as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”, suggesting that those inside the club are leaning towards a new venue being built.
