Newcastle United are interested in signing Brighton forward Joao Pedro this summer after it was revealed he is ready to leave the Premier League side.

The 23-year-old is coming off the back of an impressive season with the Seagulls, scoring 10 goals and bagging six assists.

His promising season has caught the eye of several clubs this summer, including Newcastle United. It comes as no surprise that Newcastle are looking to sign an attacker this summer with Callum Wilson’s contract situation still in limbo and Jacob Murphy being the only natural right-wing option for the majority of the season.

Newcastle are very interested in signing Joao Pedro, with the Brazilian being on the Magpies’ radar for around three years. In 2022, Newcastle had agreed a deal to sign Joao Pedro from Watford, but backed out of the deal when signing Alexander Isak became a possibility.

With Newcastle now back in for Joao Pedro, we look at how the attacker has performed in his previous appearances at St James’ Park.

Joao Pedro has been a problem for Newcastle United at St James’ Park

Joao Pedro was upset when his Newcastle move broke down, but he now has the opportunity to join the Magpies as a player with much more experience and quality.

One aspect of the deal that does seem confusing is how he will fit into the starting XI. Having played as a striker for most of his appearances under Fabian Hurzeler at Brighton, Joao Pedro will surely want to continue playing in that position.

The Brazilian can also play as a left-winger, so Howe would effectively be getting the best of both worlds by signing him.

Howe will also be pleased to know that Joao Pedro has impressed in his two appearances at St James’ Park against the Magpies, scoring once and providing an assist.

Joao Pedro’s most recent St James’ Park appearance came in a controversial FA Cup game, which saw Newcastle and Brighton have a player sent off. Joao Pedro provided the assist for Yankuba Minteh’s goal, a player who was forced to leave the club in 2024.

Newcastle United have the edge on Chelsea in Joao Pedro race

Newcastle have a healthy transfer budget to spend this summer, but could be forced to fork out as much as £60m for Joao Pedro if he is to join them.

Reports have stated that Chelsea are also interested in signing Joao Pedro, with the Blues able to offer him the same as Newcastle can thanks to their qualification for the Champions League.

However, it is believed that Newcastle are ahead of Chelsea in the Joao Pedro race, and are more likely to get a deal done for him. It would be a huge win for the Magpies after Chelsea beat Newcastle to Liam Delap’s signature, despite positive talks.

Elsewhere, Newcastle are interested in Anthony Elanga, who they tried to sign at the end of the 2024 summer transfer window to no avail.
