In less than three weeks, Eddie Howe will have the chance to improve his Newcastle United squad.

The Magpies have been stretched to their limit over the past month or so, with Howe’s side crippled with injuries to the point they could field an entire XI of players who are out of action – and that is without including the suspended Sandro Tonali.

There has been some positive news on the injury front. Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff are back, which is a huge boost ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League clash with AC Milan.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, with Howe finally starting to get players back to fitness.

However, that does not mean that the January transfer window is any less important, and an update from iNews has shared how the Newcastle manager feels about the possibility of making some new signings next month.

Eddie Howe ready to add fresh faces to his Newcastle squad when the transfer window opens

According to iNews, Howe is privately aware that Newcastle need to make some new signings in January due to the number of long-term injuries they have got. They state that he has accepted that his squad needs support.

One area that Newcastle will look to improve in is midfield, and that looks set to be the Magpies’ biggest area of concern with Tonali set to miss the rest of the campaign. Kalvin Phillips has been heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park, and iNews state that the Manchester City man is a priority target for Newcastle.

Elsewhere, the report states that Newcastle could look to bring in a goalkeeper and a younger forward.

The club are right to identify those positions as their biggest areas of concern. An attacker would certainly be very welcome, as Howe’s inability to rotate in recent weeks has left our forward line looking a bit one dimensional.

Howe needs options, and they could arrive in the shape of new signings next month.

Given the amount of players Newcastle could target, this upcoming January transfer window could be a very exciting one, although perhaps not quite as frantic as the one immediately after the takeover two years ago.
