‘He’s so quick’… Callum Wilson thinks 22-year-old Newcastle player could switch positions soon

Callum Wilson has been so impressed with one of his Newcastle United teammates after a huge win over Aston Villa on Tuesday.

Newcastle were back to their best during the week after beating Villa who had almost gone a whole year without losing at Villa Park in the Premier League.

An unfortunate injury to Alexander Isak meant that Anthony Gordon moved into a central role and speaking on The Footballer’s Podcast, Wilson suggested Gordon may have a future as a striker at Newcastle.

Wilson says Newcastle teammate was ‘fantastic’ in new position

There’s been a few times now where Gordon has been used as a striker under Eddie Howe because of Isak and Wilson’s unreliable fitness records and he’s actually done quite well in that role.

Back in November the £45m signing started up front against Arsenal and grabbed the winning goal after being in the right place at the right time like a true goal poacher to secure all three points in a 1-0 win.

Gordon was also played up top during England Under-21s Euro victory in the summer where he was dropping a bit deeper and bringing others into play to great effect, winning player of the tournament.

Against Villa, Wilson liked what he saw from the 22-year-old and suggested that he could make the change later in his Newcastle career.

On the podcast, Wilson said: “Anthony Gordon played down the middle and played fantastic so I guess there is a latter stages of his career, number nine shirt waiting for him somewhere!

“He made some good runs in behind, was mixing up his movement short and long, he was like a nine and a half. He wasn’t an out and out nine. He was dropping in and going long.

“And he’s so quick so he was giving us that threat that probably Alex couldn’t give if he was carrying an injury. On the weekend, who knows, he might find himself starting down that position.”

Gordon has been Newcastle’s best player this season

Gordon’s record against the biggest teams in the Premier League has been unbelievable this season with either a goal or an assist against most of those sides in what has been a brilliant first half of the campaign.

His pace, ability to drive at goal and his improved finishing from distance has been so crucial to some huge results for Newcastle who would be in a much trickier position without the winger.

With Wilson touch and go for the Luton game and Isak ruled out we could see Gordon used in a more central role again at the weekend and the Newcastle attacker will be looking to add to his brilliant goal tally in another huge game at St James’ Park.
