‘He’s been great’: Fabian Schar is shocked by how good Newcastle 29-year-old has been lately

Fabian Schar is playing brilliantly for Newcastle United right now, and so is his defensive partner.

Usually, that honour goes to Sven Botman. However, the 23-year-old is out of action with a knee injury and has not played since Newcastle’s 8-0 win over Sheffield United.

Since then, Jamaal Lascelles has played every single minute for the Magpies. The captain has been thrust back into the starting lineup, and it is fair to say that he has been outstanding.

The 29-year-old has defied belief with his performances, and he even produced an incredible display in the Champions League to help Newcastle beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1.

Lascelles has been on the fringes for so long, so it was a big ask for him to come into such high profile games and perform. But he has done exactly that, meaning Toon fans have not been too concerned by Sven Botman’s absence.

For Fabian Schar, he has been rolling back the years to play alongside Jamaal Lascelles, and he has admitted that he is delighted to see his long term teammate do so well in black and white.

Schar has spoke to NUFC TV ahead of Newcastle’s game against Wolves, and was asked about Lascelles’ recent form.

“I think he’s been great,” he said.

“It wasn’t easy for him to come into the team and perform at this level but I have to say he’s done brilliant.

“He’s so good in the dressing room as well, so I’m really pleased for him. He’s doing well.”

Lascelles is playing so well right now

It has been fantastic to see Lascelles playing so well as of late. He is yet another player who has improved massively under the guidance of Eddie Howe.

Schar is another, and it is incredible to see what Newcastle are achieving right now with players who have represented the club during relegation battles.

It sums up the remarkable turnaround at St James’ Park, and it makes our recent success all the more impressive.

Lascelles is enjoying a strong run in the side, and he will be keen to keep it going for as long as possible. However, he will be very aware that Botman is nearing a return from injury, which could lead to him returning to the bench.
