Alan Shearer has now named who he thinks is Newcastle United’s greatest every player.
There’s not been too many to choose from in the last couple of decades given the lack of success for Newcastle so you may have to cast your mind back to find some of the better answers.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer didn’t want to name himself and couldn’t remember as far back as Jackie Milburn, so he suggested Peter Beardsley as the greatest ever player.
Shearer makes tough Newcastle choice
For those younger fans it’s perhaps a bit of an easier choice purely because the good players were often few and far between, and they typically didn’t stay long as bigger teams picked them off.
Yohan Cabaye would certainly be an option for the modern era while Bruno Guimaraes or Alexander Isak could make a claim for themselves in this current team given how successful they’ve already been.
But for the greatest Newcastle player of all time you’ll have to really look back in time at when Newcastle had some brilliant local players like Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and obviously Shearer.
Of course, it’s very difficult to pick someone who you’ve never watched before, which is why Shearer was almost forced to pick someone from his childhood, but Beardsley would have still been a great shout regardless of anything else.
On the podcast, Shearer said: “I wouldn’t ever say myself so Peter Beardsley I think. He was unbelievable, he was a great player. I didn’t see Jackie Milburn but certainly in my era, Peter Beardsley.”

Newcastle now want to create their own history
It feels like for far too long Newcastle have been looking back and remembering the so-called glory days of the mid to late 90s in which they didn’t win anything but had a team to be very excited about.
This current team is definitely giving them a run for their money and they certainly have the investment and long-term plans to one day overtake the entertainers, at least in terms of silverware.
Newcastle’s new owners are hoping to create a historic team who fans in 20 or 30 years time can look back and remember fondly, but it’s not exactly an easy process.
These days you have to compete with the absolute powerhouse that is Manchester City and it’s difficult to see anyone overtaking them in the modern era, so Eddie Howe certainly has his work cut out for him.
