Eddie Howe has been speaking very highly of one Newcastle United player despite suffering some poor results in the last few weeks.
It’s been difficult to find the positives in Newcastle’s performance as of late having lost to Everton, Luton and Nottingham Forest in the last month, but Lewis Miley is certainly a highlight.
Howe spoke to the media after the defeat to Forest where he acknowledged just how good Miley has been since slotting into the team and what he’s brought to this Newcastle side.
Miley is a shining light in a difficult period for Newcastle
There’s no doubt that Miley will still be frustrated that the team haven’t been able to pick up too many victories in the last few weeks, but he can still be proud of what he’s achieved.
It’s been a long time since Newcastle have had someone be absolutely quality at that age and it could be a sign of things to come if the club are continuing to invest into the academy.
The 17-year-old was probably the best player on the pitch yesterday in the first half at least, one of the few who could hold their heads high after what was probably the most embarrassing result under Howe.
Miley just looks so good on the ball, so confident and composed you’d hardly believed that he was only 17 if it hadn’t been discussed in almost every corner of the footballing world.
In his interview, Howe said: “He has been incredible to be honest. When we go back to the Chelsea game, which was his first match, he set the goal up for us and that gave us a real lift and since then he has performed really well, he has been very consistent for someone so young.
“I have been thinking there has definitely been games where we would have liked to have taken him out and kept him really fresh for when he has played but he has done so well that we have continually put him back in.”

Miley is already one of the key players for the Magpies
Howe understandably wants to protect Miley from playing too much football at his young age so that he’s not preventing his development later in his Newcastle career.
Up until now, however, the boss has had little choice when it comes to picking the team because of injuries to Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Joelinton, but even with everyone fully fit the teenager has given a good case to be considered a starter.
Especially in the last few games Miley has performed better than Longstaff and offered an alternative option in the middle of the field when Newcastle have been frustrated by a low block.
