Newcastle United have been linked with signing Harry Winks before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
As it stands, the Magpies have only made one first-team signing this summer. However, we desperately need more reinforcements alongside Joe Willock.
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are still looking at fresh faces, but need to move some players on before making any signings.
They state that Steve Bruce is keen on Hamza Choudhury and Phil Jones, as well as Spurs midfielder Winks.
In an ideal world we would sign two of those three, with Newcastle needing to strengthen at centre-back and centre-midfield.
But if we can only sign one, Winks would be the perfect addition. Some fans are certainly excited by links with the 10-time England international.
The 25-year-old is out of favour at Tottenham, playing just thee Premier League minutes so far. However, he would be very welcome at St James’ Park.
Signing Harry Winks would be great business by Newcastle
After two league games, it’s clear our midfield isn’t good enough. On top of that, we’ve also suffered injuries to Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden.
With Bruce wanting to play the ball out from the back, we need a midfielder who can take possession anywhere. We need someone who can receive the ball on the half turn and progress the play up the pitch.
Winks is perfectly capable of doing that. He can play in the Shelvey role, but with less Hollywood passes and more energy off the ball.
While he’s featuring less and less for Tottenham, Winks has received praise from a lot of influential managers.
Pep Guardiola hailed the midfielder in 2018, while Gareth Southgate spoke about Winks’ ability to connect defence and attack for England in 2019.
With minutes dwindling at Tottenham and a World Cup on the horizon, Winks has a point to prove. He could certainly do that at Newcastle, where he’d be the focal point of a midfield that desperately needs a lift.
