Steve Bruce has confirmed that Graeme Jones won’t return to his job at Newcastle for at least another couple of weeks.

While most of Newcastle United’s players and coaching staff have been off since the season ended, Jones has been with England at Euro 2020.

The 51-year-old has been on loan to the Three Lions, joining Gareth Southgate’s backroom staff.

It was an incredibly successful tournament for England, that nearly ended with football coming home.

Sadly, England were beaten in the final by Italy on penalties.

After the highs of following England, fans will now turn back to club football. And for Newcastle supporters, there’s not a lot to be excited about right now.

The squad is weaker than it was last season. There have been no first-team signings. The takeover saga still hasn’t reached a conclusion.

Now we are set to be without one of our coaches for the majority of pre-season.

When will Graeme Jones return to Newcastle?

While Jones nearly etched his name in the history books on Sunday night, the Newcastle United team are hard at work, preparing for the new season.

The Magpies’ first friendlies are on Sunday, with two separate sides taking on York and Harrogate.

Ahead of the game, Newcastle are at a training camp in York, and Bruce has spoken to NUFC TV about his missing coach.

“I have spoken to him [Jones] regularly over the last two or three weeks,” Bruce said.

“I am delighted for him to be given that opportunity and us going so close. When you get that far and you lose at Wembley in a final it is not nice so he will need a break.

“He will join us in two to three weeks time too and refresh himself and dust himself down.”

This is certainly a blow to Newcastle’s preparations. Jones has been a pivotal figure at the club since arriving earlier in the year.

Now Bruce and the rest of his staff are under pressure to prepare the players in Jones’ absence.

While it was excellent that Jones got to be a part of the England setup, the Three Lions going deep into the competition is having a negative impact on our preparations for the new Premier League season.
