Graeme Jones’ incredible praise for Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson saved us once again on Saturday.

The Magpies could have been on the end of a hiding against Crystal Palace, with Patrick Vieira’s side dominating from the first minute.

If the Eagles, or more specifically Christian Benteke, had been more clinical in front of goal, it would have been another defeat for Newcastle.

But Graeme Jones’ side were able to cling on and grab a point thanks to Wilson’s wondergoal.

Emil Krafth’s header fell into the path of the 29-year-old who looped a stunning overhead kick into the top corner.

It was Wilson’s fourth goal of the season in five appearances – an impressive tally since becoming the club’s number nine.

Forget Lukaku and Kane…

After the game, interim boss Jones was full of praise for his striker. In fact, he believes that Wilson is the best he’s worked with when it comes to one thing.

“With Cal, he is a unique striker. In training he is a good finisher, he works and is a fantastic professional,” Jones told Newcastle World.

“On a matchday, there is a stimulation, something comes out of him where he has the mentality to perform for Newcastle United.

“He is the best matchday finisher I have worked with.”

That’s huge praise from Jones when you consider the strikers he’s worked with. During the summer he was coaching Harry Kane with England, while he’s previously worked with Romelu Lukaku during his time with the Belgian national team.

But according to Jones, Wilson is above those two world class stars when it comes to ‘matchday’ finishing.

By no means is he saying that he’s better than Kane and Lukaku, but to have that mentality to score goals when it matters shows what a player Newcastle have on their hands.

He’s everything you want in a striker – other than his fitness woes.

Wilson scored 12 times last season in 26 Premier League appearances, and he’ll be hoping to beat that tally this time out. He’s certainly on track to do so, and his goals will be vital to keeping us in the top flight.
