Germany boss Julien Nagelsmann has commented on Nick Woltemade’s club-record move to Newcastle United.

After spending the majority of the summer looking for a striker, the Magpies finally settled on the 23-year-old towering attacker from VfB Stuttgart.

Newcastle United were rejected by strikers like Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko during the summer transfer window, but were finally given a chance by Nick Woltemade, who scored 12 goals in 28 Bundesliga appearances.

Club legend Alan Shearer thinks Woltemade’s signing is a risk for Newcastle, but also stated that it was a clever move for the Magpies. Woltemade is seen as the replacement for Alexander Isak, who left Newcastle on deadline day, joining Liverpool for a club record fee.

With the German in line for his Newcastle debut against Wolves next week, Julian Nagelsmann has shared his opinion on the £69m deal.

Julian Nagelsmann’s one wish for Nick Woltemade at Newcastle United

Woltemade started in Germany’s shock defeat to Slovakia on Thursday night, failing to register a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

The striker has the opportunity to impress again on Sunday evening, when Germany play Northern Ireland in Cologne.

Bastian Schweinsteiger said Germany offered no threat, suggesting Woltemade was at fault for their lack of attacking presence in Bratislava.

Woltemade joined Newcastle shortly after Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, and in his pre-match press conference, Nagelsmann expressed his desire to see Woltemade play frequently for the Magpies.

“I’m happy when they play a lot of games and get a lot of minutes, that’s the most important thing for me,” he told the press.

“It’s not ideal for the German Bundesliga that the best German players are moving to England. But that’s how it is. It’s kind of normal at this period of time.

“Flo is already one of the most important players for us. Nick is, too and will be in the future. I hope Nick will play regularly at Newcastle so he can develop in the right way. If they do, then they will play a big role for us.”

Nick Woltemade has the backing of Newcastle United fans ahead of debut

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe will start Yoane Wissa or Woltemade for Newcastle’s game against Wolves at St James’ Park.

Woltemade is the more match-fit player, but lacks the Premier League experience that Wissa has. With that being said, Wissa started for DR Congo against South Sudan, scoring and providing an assist.

While their last international appearance was not what was expected of him, Newcastle fans still backed Woltemade, believing that his performance was down to a lack of adequate service, rather than anything of his doing.

There is a lot of pressure on Woltemade to succeed at Newcastle. By no means is the record price tag their fault, but there will be a natural expectation to deliver with the amount of money the deal has cost the club.

Woltemade will be involved in some way against Wolves, but Howe may opt for Wissa in the starting XI.
