Newcastle United centre-back Fabian Schar has once again been included in Garth Crooks’ Premier League team of the week for BBC Sport.

After laying on Joe Willock’s goal in the 2-0 win at Brentford last weekend, the Swiss international grabbed his first goal of the season for the Magpies in Saturday’s 2-1 win against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Newcastle’s number five headed home a Ryan Fraser free-kick shortly after the Scotland international had broken the deadlock.

The 30-year-old was making his ninth consecutive Premier League start and Schar has started every game under Eddie Howe barring a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City, where he was an unused substitute.

The former Deportivo La Coruna defender’s relationship with Dan Burn continues to strengthen and blossom with every passing game.

But it was the 69-time Swiss international who caught Crooks’ eye yet again.

On Schar, Crooks said: “Last week Fabian Schar was making goals, this week he’s scoring them. It was great movement and a brilliant header and the Magpies are flying.

“It’s the second consecutive time that Schar has made my team of the week and if he keeps on playing like this he might make my team of the season.”

Crooks also reserved praise for the club’s new owners who he felt had got every major decision “spot on” since completing the takeover.

The BBC Sport pundit said: “It’s not that long ago Newcastle were in the bottom three and fighting for their lives. I don’t know who is advising the new owners but they have got all the major decisions absolutely spot on since their arrival at St James’ Park.”

The 63-year-old also felt that Eddie Howe was a worthy candidate for the manager of the season gong.

No team is on a longer unbeaten run in the Premier League than Newcastle, who are now without defeat in their past eight games in the top-flight.

The former Bournemouth man has completely transformed the Toon Army’s fortunes and he will be hoping to make it nine game unbeaten with a positive result at Southampton on Thursday night.
