Anthony Gordon made his debut for Gareth Southgate’s England side this weekend as they lost 1-0 to Brazil.
Gordon enjoyed some bright moments during the game but ultimately England were unable to really create anything special that looked like it might lead to a goal.
Speaking after the game, Southgate shared his thoughts on Gordon’s debut having played 75 minutes against Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes before being substituted for Marcus Rashford.
Southgate thinks Gordon had a solid debut vs Brazil
There wasn’t much to shout about for any player during the game, a typical international friendly in which nobody looked they were really going to create much.
It’s what England fans have become used to under Southgate these last few years and it doesn’t exactly bode well ahead of this summer’s European Championships with the team still looking a bit off the mark.
For Gordon, however, it was a big night for him personally having made getting into Southgate’s England team his number one goal this season and finally getting a chance in the last international break of the season.
The attacker started the game on the left-wing and actually completed the most dribbles (four) and tackles (two) in the game before leaving the pitch with 15 minutes to go.
On Gordon, Southgate said: “I thought Anthony Gordon had been in an England shirt for a long time. He looked settled with it, a couple of attempts on goal – he took his club form into an England shirt.”

Gordon’s England future looks bright
Despite being in a team that created very little, Gordon looked like the most likely England attacker to go and create something out of nothing, which Newcastle fans will know too well just how good he is at it.
The winger’s pace could be useful for England who, for the most part, look very sluggish on the ball and like to take their time with their build-up play, but Gordon offers a different kind of option.
Should he keep up the same form for Newcastle in the final stretch of Premier League games, there’s absolutely no reason why Gordon shouldn’t keep his place under Southgate for this summer.
Being in and around all of these England players could also be great news for Newcastle as the former Everton man looks to raise his game to keep his place in the squad.
