Anthony Gordon has opened up on what targets he set himself ahead of his first full season as a Newcastle United player.
Gordon’s impressive form has been integral for Newcastle and it has earned him a lot of respect around the Premier League as it’s often been suggested that he should be called up for England very soon.
In an interview with Craig Hope, Gordon shared how at the beginning of the season he made it his aim to get into that England team and become Newcastle’s most important player.
Gordon set himself a high target last summer
After what had been a difficult six months for Gordon since signing from Everton last January, the winger was very keen to get off to a good start for the new season and worked very hard to make it possible.
It was clear from the moment Newcastle had kicked off against Aston Villa that Gordon had gone away and done a lot of work on his fitness level which just wasn’t there last season.
Now, one of the most important parts of his game is his ability to run himself into the ground for his team and Eddie Howe who certainly demands a lot of his players with a high intensity style of play.
With an international tournament on the horizon, Gordon knew he had to step it up a level if he was to have any hope of being involved whatsoever, and getting there was his ultimate goal heading into the new campaign.
On his targets, Gordon said: “I wrote in my notebook at the start of the season that the top target was England. I also wrote that I wanted to be Newcastle’s most important player, someone the manager could depend on. I wanted something in there that I could hold myself accountable for.
“I feel like I’ve done everything I can to get in the squad. I understand the competition, and the ability in that team is frightening. But I’ve done my utmost – I’ve ran every yard I possibly could and I’ve scored and assisted at a good level.
“I’ve still got more to give, but I can be proud and say, ‘I’ve given it everything’. Every time I’m tired, I think, ‘Dig in, England could be watching!’.”

Gordon has been the standout player for Newcastle
It’s fair to say that Gordon has achieved at least one of his goals this season as he’s been Newcastle’s most important players both in terms of his ability and availability.
The 23-year-old has played a part in all but one of Newcastle’s Premier League fixtures and has recorded 15 goal contributions in that time, showing just how integral he is to Howe’ plans.
Whether he gets that England call-up on Thursday as Gareth Southgate is set to announce his squad for the upcoming friendlies doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s been the most in-form English left-winger this season.
Whatever happens he has a strong platform to build on and make sure that whoever is in charge of the Three Lions has absolutely no choice but to include him.
