Fabian Schar has confirmed he will be ruled out of action for Newcastle United’s upcoming games.

Schar suffered a head injury for Newcastle United against Barcelona, after a Marcus Rashford shot hit him from close range.

The defender initially carried on but was forced off in the end, with summer signing Malick Thiaw replacing him.

Despite his advancing years, Schar remains a very important figure at Newcastle United.

The 33-year-old is a key player in Eddie Howe’s team, starting every game so far this season after playing in almost all of them last time out.

However, the head injury he suffered against the Spanish champions will rule him out over a busy period.

Fabian Schar confirms Newcastle United injury

On Friday, the Swiss took to social media platform Instagram.

He thanked fans for their support against Barcelona, while expressing his regret that Newcastle didn’t take more from the game.

Schar also revealed that he’s set to miss the next few outings for Newcastle – starting with Sunday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth – but claimed he hoped he would be back soon.

Newcastle play Bradford, Arsenal, Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest before next month’s international break.

He captioned a post: “Disappointed not to have got more from the game but plenty more points to pick up this campaign! Unfortunately I am gonna miss a few games but hope to be back soon.”

The two Newcastle United players battling to replace Fabian Schar

Luckily, Howe has a wealth of options in the Newcastle United squad.

Though not having Schar available for at least the next few games is obviously a blow given his importance to the cause, there are other players ready to replace him.

Indeed, Sven Botman is fit again and came on against Barca. Summer signing Thiaw, meanwhile, impressed in his cameo up against the Catalan giants.

With Dan Burn arguably one of Newcastle’s most important players right now, it looks like a straight shootout between Thiaw and Botman for a starting berth down on the south coast.
