Once upon a time, Freddie Woodman was touted as the future of Newcastle United. The keeper thoroughly impressed at youth level and also won an U17 World Cup winners medal with England.
Furthermore, he did well on loan with clubs such as Kilmarnock and Swansea City. At the start of the season, Woodman had the opportunity to show his capabilities for the first team. Both Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow were injured, so Steve Bruce gave him the nod to start.
He made four appearances in the league and looked out of his depth. In January he was loaned out to Bournemouth and hasn’t had much game time. It’s been a disappointment.

Newcastle have been linked with new keepers this summer, this could spell the end for Woodman
The Magpies have been linked with Robert Sanchez of Brighton. According to The Sun, they’re eyeing up a £20million bid for him. Meanwhile, there are also rumours involving Dean Henderson and Bernd Leno.
Currently, Newcastle have four senior stoppers at the club, including Woodman. Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie are all part of the current 25-man squad.
Should they pursue Sanchez or another keeper that makes it even more of a challenge for Woodman. We may see him sold this summer. Even if Newcastle don’t sign another goalkeeper, those three will likely remain in the squad.
Gillespie is the one who some fans may question as to why he’s there. But he was signed as a third choice keeper and is a home-grown player.

Woodman is younger and will want to see if he can get minutes elsewhere. He has proven he can do well in the Championship with Swansea. Last season he won the Golden Glove with the Swans.
He’s been kept out at Bournemouth by Mark Travers, who is having an impressive campaign. This summer a number of Championship clubs may look to bring in Woodman.
Considering what could’ve been, it’s a shame about Woodman. However, the best option for him now could be to leave Newcastle. You can’t see how he’ll break into the squad and if he wants first-team football, he may have to secure a move this summer.
